Deerlake Weekly Letter

I was feeling kind of good seeing our 20 acres of trees getting a little needed watering. Along with some rain came about an inch or so of dime size hail. The evergreen trees did seem to enjoy all the water, but then I checked my garden and flowers, 20 to 50% of all the leaves were either shredded or knocked off completely. The corn was lying down and the squash had holes in it. My poor garden is going to have to grow more leaves before it can produce much else. Ok, done whining now.

We are really getting into this pottery stuff. Every aspect of pottery has a learning curve. After many trials, it seems we may be about to get some very nice pieces made. Sure is a great hobby. Takes lots of time, but boy is it cool when you have created a true work of art.

What about them Olympics? Kind of wish they were held in my small town. Bet it would be a great time to see all the athletes racing for the finish line. Guess I'll settle to watch the local kids going for their own gold. A reminder that there is a lot of free fun entertainment in all our neighborhoods. Bring a soft cushion to sit on, a hat for shade, and if you are like us, bring along a camera to catch some of the neat one of a kind photo opportunities. Have a fun summer.

Here is a true story I would like to share. Printed in the local newspaper here in Kalispell Montana.

As everyone knows, August fishing can be tough because warm surface water drives most of our fishes deep, where they are more difficult to locate and catch. But sometimes tasty fish can literally fall into your frying pan.

Last week I received a call from a gentleman with a very unusual fish story. This fellow lives about a fourth of a mile from the Flathead River. One day while working in his back yard, he heard a whoosh of air from the wings of a large bird. Out of the corner of his eye he glimpsed a low flying osprey fighting for elevation.

Then, he heard something bounce off his roof and a fat rainbow trout was flopping at his feet. The 13 1/2-inch rainbow trout was still very alive. The man had trouble grasping the wiggly trout. He then carried the trout to his sink and watched it swim, while he contemplated what to do.

Should he fill a bucket with water and take it to the river or should he be thankful for this gift from heaven? Thinking this might be a direct gift from a higher power — a spiritual power not a bird — he decided it would be inappropriate to return the fish to the wild.

Out came the fillet knife. A clunk on the head, and soon two nice trout fillets were in the refrigerator. That night the fish helped to feed his family. Truly a gift from heaven.

The hot weather is upon us and it's time to find a place to stay cool and just relax during the hottest of summer months. It seems that this is always the busiest time of year for me. We are busy in the garden, Steven harvests the goods and fills the sink with them. I on the other hand am busy cleaning the sink and canning. Making a lot of jam now and looking forward to the corn.

We decided to hike in on the 3rd of July 2008. The Going to the Sun road had just opened. Due to unusual amounts of snow in the park all the waterfalls were running wild. The creeks too were all running high.

There is a special place in Glacier National Park called Cut Bank. We took a nice day hike into Cut Bank and got some real nice photos to share. Not many people find Cut Bank so will never see these mountains, flowers, and river. Be sure to see the slide show at the bottom of the page.

In the Two Medicine area of Glacier Park there is a pretty little falls called Twin Falls. We have a couple of good photos and a movie for you to see.

Other than that we are making pottery and harvesting the garden. Time for us gardeners to rejoice.

The lake was great, pictures were many, but alas it is time to get back to work. Glacier Park was slow to open this year with all the late snow fall. The plowing of the Going To The Sun Road was not complete until the 2nd of July. The late snow melt was great for the waterfall pictures, we will be sure and get some on soon for you all to see.

Ahh... a camping we will go. Time to take a break and just go play. Our big trip for this summer is just in time for record high temperatures. We will be spending some time at Saint Mary's Lake camping. Also doing a little hiking around the area looking for those one of a kind photos. Hope the bears are friendly this year.

Memorial Day is the beginning of summer for most of us. Traveling could be a bit more expensive with the gas prices on the rise again. And still this could be a great year to investigate and enjoy the wonderful places where we live. I just love this time of year, when everything is growing and green once again.

This year we have planted corn, strawberries, Hubbard squash, onions, peppers and tomatoes in our garden. It's so hard to get good corn or strawberries at the stores around here. Nice to have them grow in your own garden. And Hey, must be time for a Rodeo, Yee Haw.

Feels like summer and are we ever ready for it. Took me nearly a month to install a new air source air conditioner. This is our first air conditioner ever. Should do the trick and keep us cool as cucumbers.

Today is concrete day around here. Doing it all ourselves of course. One yard for part of a retaining wall, one yard for the air source heat pump pedestal. And two yards for a new floor in one of our out buildings. The fun part will be trying to add color to the concrete floor. The color is called a concrete hardener. We have two colors, a red and a brown and plan to have the colors mix together a bit. After the screed process, the dry color hardener is thrown or spread out as best you can. Then during the float and trowel process the color gets mixed into the top layer of concrete. Wish us luck.

We are proud of our grandkids. All three of them are learning to type at the same time. With a mix of competition and incentives, they all be a gittin er done. Hurray for the efforts of each one of them. I know it's hard, but if they get to 40 words per minute, then they have done it. Never again in their lifetimes will they even be tempted to look at the keys. Some day people will not use the key boards to type words anymore. I am sure word recognition software will someday become a part of our daily lives. Till then everyone will just have to learn it the old fashion way, one memorized key stroke at a time.
