Hot Springs and Fall Colors

img_5828s img_5823s

My traveling buddy and I took off on a Thursday morning, drove to Thermopolis Wyoming in search of hot springs. We found them alright. The town appropriately named has two large pool buildings and one smaller free bath house. All are heated by the thermal springs running underground. Not far from town is a Petroglyph site with cave writings a long a rock wall. It was no wonder that thousands of years ago people settled here with the hot springs so close. It was a fun place to hike and enjoy the minerals baths.

The next day it was forward ho as we traveled down to Golden Colorado. Taking a ride through the mountains on the Georgetown Loop steam train. And touring through the Lebanon Silver Mine.

Visiting with the Granddaughters

We have our daughter and granddaughters here for a couple of weeks. Life is busy, they talked me into downloading an app on my phone that keeps track of my steps. I thought that I was keeping track of them pretty well up until now, instead of making me walk more, it just reminds me that I am not walking as much as I should. Not sure it is a good thing or not.
I am enjoying having them around for awhile though. We’re heading over to WA. state for a family reunion next week. Will see a few of the sites, do a little hiking and then back home for a well deserved rest, I will need it by then. The girls are in high school now, both have their cars and not easy to keep up with them. I remember the days when I had teenagers, just was not enough time in the day to get everything done.

The cherries are hanging from the trees, the cauliflower looks like it had a bit too much fertilizer (It’s huge!!!!), and the chicks are growing like weeds. Life is good on the farm. We haven’t heard the guinea hens get overly loud yet, but everyone says it’s coming. I think that I am kinda looking forward to it, ever since losing the dog, it’s just too quiet around here. We have been kicking around the idea of getting a Britney or a blue tick hound dog, they both look like they would fit right into our life style. The Britney is a little smaller, making it a good dog for being in the house with us, and the hound just has that lazy look and feeling like she would fit right in also. What kind do you like?

You don’t have to see them or talk to them every day,
To know that God has sent them in His own special way.

Poem from Jeannie

The visit
My friends they came to visit…
Just the other day…
We talked about a lot things…
There was many things to say…
We went outside into the yard…
A little vault was there…
It was very cold inside the vault…
Too cold for us, I swear…
Becca tried to teach me…
How to access my poetry page…
But shucks it just did not sink in…
I blame it on my AGE…
We gave up on that real quick…
So we went back inside…
Until Steven stood up and said…
“Becca I guess it’s time we start the drive”…
We stepped out front onto the lawn…
When a mushroom cloud appeared…
Spewing high into the air…
Then it disappeared…
A ball of fire lit up the night…
From that factory down the street…
It burned so long, and got so close…
We could really feel the heat…
Thankfully a little luck…
Had fallen on our side…
The fire stopped just short of us…
And they took it right in stride…
They jumped into their car just then…
And headed down the street…
I watched the car as it disappeared…
It was really bittersweet…
To Steven and Becca!

DeerLake Weekly Letter, Frog and the Gift of Music

The grass is growing and it’s time to break out the lawn mower for the year. Didn’t have to worry too much about grass the last couple of years, since we had the geese that would eat it down. No geese this year. Going for baby chicks instead. It’s time to replenish our laying hens. This year was a tough one on the hens, for some reason they just did not fair all that well. They went into their yearly molt and only half of them really started laying again. Getting old I suppose. Hope to keep 9 Black Star and one Anaconda for new laying hens. Also will raise up 20 more chickens for eating.

We have just received photos of the Grand daughters getting ready for their proms and military balls with their young men, they look so grownup and beautiful. Time goes by so fast. I didn’t think we were getting that old. We are lucky and blessed to have healthy grandkids, so proud of all three.

Figuring out that we love strawberries and blueberries in our morning smoothies, so we planted a lot more. Now we need a larger freezer. Also got one of those FoodSaver that sucks the air-out when sealing. Works pretty cool. I’m thinking we could probably grow two years worth of potatoes this year. Freeze up the first years potatoes in regular freezer bags and FoodSaver the rest. Last year, we sliced half of the potatoes and mashed the other half, then froze them all. It worked pretty good, wasn’t sure how it would work with having mashed potatoes but we liked the frozen mashed best. To-cook you just drop the frozen mashed potatoes into a pan with a little milk and simmer, stirring until they are completely mixed together. The FoodSaver says that freezer food will last twice as long. Who knew!

“I see you have a guardian angel with you.”

We asked why she would make such a comment, and were informed that the frogs were a gift.

Time to Plant the Garden, Steven and Becca

DeerLake Weekly Letter,

Howdy all you fine folks. Becca and I planted Dahlia tubers that we dug up last year. We have never gotten any of our dahlias to bloom a second year before. I’m hoping this will be the year. We have friends that have a pretty good size dahlia garden. They store their tubers and take care not to let them get moldy or dry up during the winter. This year we really tried to keep ours good. We shall see.
It sure is a nice time of year, all the new flowers blooming and so many trees in full flower. Love it, Love it!

Wow, we just had a huge thunderstorm blow over. The first good one of the season. We like to sit on the deck, under the roof and watch as the lightning lights up the mountains surrounding us. Sure did make my dog nervous. All is fine now. Tomorrow I’ll check out my driveway. It may have a big washout where all that rain water rushes down and out to the road.

It’s that time of year, the crews are working hard to clear the snow from the Going To The Sun road in Glacier National Park. I don’t think I have ever seen that big of a snow plow before, it is huge. Pretty amazing that they can drive that small road with those big rigs and clear that much snow. The snowpack over the winter gets pretty deep up there. Looking at the pictures you can’t tell where the road is suppose to be. They have the east side of the park going to Many Glacier, clear and you can get into a few more places over there. The west side is closed just beyond McDonald Lake. This week we have photos of Fishercap Lake in the Many Glacier Area.

Enjoy another part of Glacier Park.

This tiny, shallow, 12-acre lake is one of Glacier National Park’s best kept wilderness secrets.
Surrounded by spectacular looking rugged mountains on all sides, the lake’s still aqua colored surface mirroring the peaks on a sunny clear day.

DeerLake Weekly Letter, Grand Canyon Video

Yeah, Becca made a nice video of her trip to the Grand Canyon. Being a little afraid of heights, she was a bit apprehensive about going to the Sky Walk. But she did-it, and says it’s not that scary at all, guess no one tried to get pushy. It was beautiful weather for the trip, in the 80s everyday. A nice getaway from the Montana spring thaw.

On level ground Becca does fine with heights but if you get her onto a sloped roof, or the edge of a cliff, and oh my, she may freeze up like a glacier. Chuckles, I remember trying to get her to help work on the roof of this house. Even after having most of the roof on, with just a 2 – 12 slope, no way could she even stand up. She didn’t give up easy tho, she kept saying ” just give me a few more minutes, then I can stand on this roof”.

Perhaps a trip down into the Grand Canyon should be on our bucket list. I wonder how many easy ways there are to vacation down there. I like to keep our hiking down under 4 miles a day and our packs around 20 pounds. Ya, you got to know your limits, when you go beyond your limits, stress and pain will soon ensue.
How about Hang-Gliding down, and helicopter back up, bet that would be a blast. Becca is laughing at that idea.

DeerLake Weekly Letter, Signs of Spring and Heaven's Store

Becca made it to the Grand Canyon and walked out onto the Skywalk at the West Rim. Owned and managed by the Hualapai Tribe and located on tribal lands, consists of a horseshoe shaped steel frame with glass floor and sides that projects about 70 feet (21 m) from the canyon rim. I thought it would be a bit more intimidating than it was, however the sights were indeed fabulous. I am not one for heights, but I did manage to walk around and get some good photos just fine. We also hiked the Guano Point trail at Grand Canyon West! Getting site of the Grand Canyon as close as can be atop an old Guano Mine. Guests can hike the side trail to the mine or they can go up and over the rocky hill and see the spectacular sights. All in all we had a great time, visiting with friends and just relaxing.

Call me baldy, it used to be just other people would see my bald hair spot. Now I look in the mirror and what do I see, not much hair between me and my bald spot. At age 60 I can say, I had hair when I needed hair. Whats a guy to do? Guess I’ll have to be more careful about sunburns, bet that would hurt.

A big thank you to all those well wishers out there. My teeth are fixed, I’m feeling much better this week. After two crowns, and two root canals, I finally can chew again without pain. They said all the pain I was feeling was from the first tooth dieing under the new crown. All fixed now, ready to live again.

DeerLake Weekly Letter, McDonald Lake and I Will Sing Now

April Fools Day, how many dentists does it take to fix a toothache.
No joke folks, this week has been quite the ordeal for Steven. A while back he went in to get his checkup at the dentist. Was told that he had a cavity in a tooth that needed a crown. No problem, we call the laser dentist to put the crown on and he does the crown, but notices that the tooth above the new crown is the tooth giving Steven the pain. After checking it out more, sends him over to the root canal dentist and he gets a root canal to permanently fix the problem. After getting a shot of Novocaine, Steven is still in pain, dentist looks around more and tells him that the tooth next to the crowned tooth earlier-repaired is failing and will need to be repaired. So one crown and one root canal done and waiting for the third tooth to get fixed and still in pain.
What a drag!!!
He was given instructions to use Tylenol and Ibuprofen for the pain. It don’t work, now he can’t sleep and the only relief comes from up and moving around, must be a blood flow thing. Whenever he sits still for any length of time the pain comes back big-time. Perhaps another root canal on Monday will fix it.

Spring fever is getting the best of us. We have been preparing the garden, working around the place getting ready for those sunny summer days. Becca is going to take a little trip with a girlfriend. They fly into Vegas, see a show and then take a tour to the Grand Canyon. Should be nice weather for the trip.

Living in NW Montana has many opportunities for adventures year round. However, it sometimes takes an imagination to keep the ideas flowing. Even though the weather usually gets warmer this time of year, we can have unexpected weather changes throughout the day. For example, yesterday, in the morning we had a few inches of snow, and by afternoon it was clear, cold and sunny with green grass again.
I would encourage you to look beyond your backyard this spring. The world is full of amazing places to be explored, not just in the mountains as a hiker, but also in the towns and surrounding areas. It’s nice to get out and about.
A couple of simple tips when planning an outdoor activity in the spring around Montana would be…Soak up every moment of sunshine you can, but also, remember that it still can give you a sunburn when it is cool out. Make sure to have along a big hat and proper sun protection.

Lake McDonald is the longest and deepest lake in the park,
carved 472 feet deep in places and 10 miles long by glaciers.

DeerLake Weekly Letter, Easter

Often times I like to say, “Cheaper Than a Heart Attack”. We splurge on things that are good for our health. On other things, we try to be as thrifty as we can. I think vacations with exercise are a great idea. I might be getting too old but walking across Europe sounds like fun. Wonder if I’ll need to use GPS.

On another note, I (Becca) have been reading a bit about dancing and how good-it-is for you. We all know the benefits of staying active, but did you hear that research shows that dancing also might keep you from getting dementia. Steven is not one to go out dancing, but I do believe I wrote earlier that he splurges on things that keep him healthy. Whether you can get someone to go dancing with you or not, just get up and do it. It’s just as good to turn on your own music and get up ~N~ dance.

Today was our first day that hit 70 degrees, how nice. All the tree trimming is done, next comes 5 cords of firewood. Oh my aching back. I’ve made more pottery pieces so we can try out our new glaze. Twelve new mugs and many other pottery pieces to paint. Lately we have been learning how to make coil-pots. I like the challenge of making larger pottery pieces, and coil-pots can get really big. This year, so far, Becca has been making some pretty large pottery with coils. Next week we will make a page so you can see all of Becca’s new pottery, pretty amazing stuff!

Our new seeds for this year’s garden arrived today. Oh fun, a much bigger better garden going-in this year.

Ever hear of Nematodes?, There’s new ways to battle garden bugs and pests, it’s great that we never need to spray poison on the food we grow again.
