DeerLake Weekly Letter, History in Names and Cow Camp

Record wildfires in the west have everyone choked up. Three weeks of breathing smoke and they say the smoke may continue for another month. I just scratch my head. Someday wildfires will be controlled burns, better land management, and quick response. Why can’t fires be put out when they are just one acre? Seriously, what would be the problem with having a large fleet of planes and helicopters equipped to just fight fires. With the past several years of fires all across our country, you would think this to be a priority. Where is the common sense in this destruction?

Becca, started her second year of college today. Mostly she goes just cause she can, its challenging and fun. I’m so proud that she can do it and get good grades. Next she’ll want me to send her out the door each morning with her lunch box packed and a cup of coffee in hand.

We are winding down the gardens here. So far things are still growing good in our garden, however several of our friends in the valley have been hit by frost already. The pumpkins and the squash are just about ready, and you know what that means. Yep it’s Fall !!! Hard to believe, but the smell of apple pie and apple sauce cooking is just around the corner. I might say this about every season, but I am really looking forward to the cooler weather and the changing of the leaves.

Gettin lots of smoke around here. We have had so much smoke that Becca and I are staying inside, running an air-cleaner. Guess it could be worse, the nearest fire is 50 miles away. Ok, there are fires in every direction, north, east, south and west, all 50 miles away. We live in a mostly forest area, our 20 acres and most of the neighbors keep their land clean from brush or other fuel-for-fires. We feel pretty safe from the fires, but today we made plans just in case of evacuation, we would grab a few things and head for a nearby lake. On the good side, we like smoke flavor, maybe the garden zucchini will be smoke flavored.   This week was Fair time in our town. They haven’t changed that much since I was a kid. There is a special local rodeo event we have here, wild stallion riding. You have to be under 12 years of age, three or four kids on a team, try to hold the horse long enough for one of them to jump on, bareback and ride away.    Let’s go fishing! I think all the national parks let you fish for free, no license necessary. At Glacier Park, Becca and I love to fish many of the lakes and rivers. The fishing is pretty good too. What we catch is mostly trout. Every way works for catching trout, I prefer to bobber and fly, while Becca prefers to attack with her fly-pole. Go ahead and ask me if Becca ever hooked her shoulder with that fly-pole. Well I’m not sure, but oh ya, a fishing trip is not complete until she hooks into something. Our different styles of fishing seems to bag the same amount of fish. Some days I catch more fish, some days she is all smiles. I remember a day when my son and I both caught a 19 inch trout. Wow, fishing days make for good memories. One time I went fishing at night with glow-in-the-dark lures. That was something, the fish would follow but never bite, shucks. Guess those fish were half-asleep.

Last weekend we went fishing up the Stillwater river out of Olney MT., an earthen-dam separates the river from the lake. They have a cafe and bar right there, with a deck that overhangs the water’s edge. Inside are several very large Pike (fish) mounted and hanging on the wall. The men are telling fish stories of the large pike that come up and eat the small ducks on the lake. After a few stories we are off to catch a few of those pike.
The dam is made of large logs and pilings where we stand while fishing. Becca, as always is standing in the middle with bare feet. The day goes on with not much action, when all of a sudden, she throws her pole and is running for the shore. Yep, you guessed it!!  She caught a pike, it came right towards her and all she could think of was that pike coming up and taking a bite out of her toes. Quite the fisherman for sure… Pike are a scary looking fish.

Are you looking for a neat place to take a drive, try the Beartooth Highway.

There are many beautiful highways in Montana, but you would be hard-pressed to beat the Beartooth Highway for pure magnificence. The road was built in 1937. It never was a primary travel route before it was built. The main reason it was developed was to bring in tourists. The road goes for 68 miles running from the town of Red Lodge in the east to Cooke City in the west. Most of the road is in Wyoming, but the Beartooths that you are constantly gazing at are in Montana. The road reaches almost 11,000 feet in elevation – it is the highest road in both Wyoming and Montana. In the east, the road switchbacks up canyon walls towering above the South Fork of Rock Creek topping out atop the Beartooth Range. The road traverses the range at high elevation across tundra plains and travels past two beautiful alpine lakes – Beartooth and Island. In the west, the road meets up with the Chief Joseph Highway coming up the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone – this is another magnificent road to travel if you have the time – just before you reach Cooke City and Yellowstone Park beyond.

Our granddaughter is an artist. At age 16, Destiny, has excelled in art. Now she is carving logs into beautiful pieces of art. Learning to carve logs with a chain saw and finish the carvings with a torch and other tools.
We are so proud that she is using and developing her talents.

We harvested all of our cherries this week. I can’t remember the name of the cherry, but it’s a pie cherry and has quite a tart taste to it. We made cherry pie filling and canned a few jars with rhubarb. They should make a nice combination, don’t you think. They both have a tartness to them. Of course the girls needed to have cherry filled crepes made also.
The harvest season is always a busy one around here. I still enjoy canning and freezing from the garden. Maybe it’s just the old-school girl in me, raised on a farm, with my mother canning all the time. Store-food just doesn’t taste the same to me.

Hi, I’m Katie, daughter of Steven and Becca. What a wild ride this summer has been for my family. Next week my kids go back to school in Kentucky and many families prepare to fall back into the same ole boring routine. This summer we have had the opportunity to take part in many new activities and have had a few unforgettable adventures. By trying something new, we have discovered new passions and learned to appreciate things that I never imagined before. Skydiving, scuba diving, paddle boarding in the ocean and hiking volcanos are just a few of the fun activities that we have tried. We tried many new foods too, I even ate a termite, which I learned is very nutritious. And we met and made friends from all over this beautiful planet.

Enjoy this truly inspiring video too.

Sun Point in Glacier National Park is one of everybody’s favorite places. It has tremendous views and several trails, many short day hikes and just as many long hikes for the hardiest of hikers. This last week a wildfire started and is traveling through this area, changing the views of this magnificent spot forever. They have closed the camp grounds in the area and are getting ready to evacuate the surrounding areas. Becca and I have been here many times and love it. It’s heart breaking to watch as our park goes up in smoke again. Many people rely on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, but you and I know there is so much more to Glacier. As the east side of the park closes down from the fire, the west side is still open and fully operational.

Steven went in for a small Hernia surgery this week, so I guess you know, I am picking up the slack. Keeping up with the animals and the gardens, running my errands and his, keeps me on my toes. Funny how you never really know what your partner does all day until you are doing it all yourself.

DeerLake Weekly Letter, North Fork and Quartz Loop Trail

We love this part of Glacier National Park. On the far northwest corner of Glacier Park, the roads are bumpy and dusty. This section is most remote, less people visit these big beautiful lakes and mountains. Becca and I don’t need paved roads, we like to explore every part of Glacier park. Quarts Lake Loop trail is on our agenda this year. Should we try the 13 miles in one day, or should we spend the night with grizzly bears, is the question right now. Only twice have we braved the wild and stayed over night while hiking. Hike fast and light or slow and heavy, I think fast and light is better. But 13 miles is far, 7 hours of hiking will be a long day. We better hit the trail 7:00 AM, I think we will not only need lunch, we will also need a nap at the lake, before heading out for the second half. Who wants to go with us?

Cradled between the Continental Divide and Whitefish Mountain Range and located a mile from the northwest entrance to Glacier National Park is the electricity-free community of Polebridge. Made up of a handful of houses, cabins, a hostel and small ranches along the North Fork Road, the hub of this area is the historic Polebridge Mercantile and its neighboring Northern Lights Saloon. The bakery in the mercantile is known valley wide for their breads and pastries. Every Saturday they bring fresh goods to sell at the local farmers markets, what a treat.

This is a quiet place except for the soft breeze in the tree branches.
The trail follows the ridge and then drops into the Quartz Creek area and enters the Red Bench Fire landscape, which burned in 1988.

Take care of yourself, be happy, love deeply and enjoy life!

Sure was a quiet 4th around here, how nice. This is the first year ever that fireworks on the 4th of July were cancelled (fire danger). As for pets and livestock, our animals sure didn’t miss the fireworks. I bet all the wild animals are happy too. I purpose we use the space-station for the next 4th of July fireworks. How about a laser light show instead. Why can’t those guys living up there, figure out how to put on a light show. What else are they doing anyways, only thing I been hearing is that they always want more stuff delivered. Lets send them some cool laser-light technology. I’ll be glad when we change from fireworks to light shows, who’s with me.

During the hot summer days, we tend to stay indoors more. Don’t forget that the warm evenings are a great time to enjoy the night skies. Taking a walk is a great way to get out and see the lights in the sky. Many of the last dark skies in the country lie over our national parks. As over-lit skies become the norm, the search is on for finding those star-filled skies.

Many visitors to the national parks are surprised to witness such a beautiful sight at night, perhaps having never seen an unfettered view of a starry sky. Many come to the parks specifically to enjoy stargazing through telescopes, walking among a natural night-time scene, or camping beneath the stars.
Glacier Park is hosting a stargazing party on the summit this weekend. I was amazed last year, when attending the party. I don’t believe that I had ever really looked at the stars through a telescope. I am looking forward to trying it again. I have always wanted to get a photo of the stars as they travel through the sky. It takes being able to leave your camera shutter open for long periods of time. Several national parks have regular stargazing programs or night appreciation events. Examples include the bat flight breakfast at Carlsbad Caverns, star parties or moonlight hikes at Bryce Canyon, telescope viewing at Rocky Mountain, the firefly show in Tennessee, and the observatory at Chaco Culture.

The Magic Bank.

Here’s wishing you a wonderful and beautiful day.

The video this week shows our geese at 6 weeks old, they’re pretty big already. They are Toulouse geese. Each day I feed them a little grain to make-um grow. Mostly they just eat grass. Some of the geese are to be sold and the rest will be in our freezer. Perhaps we will raise a few geese for breeding also, sure would be nice if we had a momma goose to do the work of raising the gaggle.

Why is it that I have just one fruit tree that is plagued with aphids? My plum tree has aphid trouble every year, even after spraying. I have tried using dish soap before on other plants, but the plants got hurt from the soap. I think I will try to pressure-wash off the leaves tonight with just hose water. I hear that you can get most of them just by hosing them off. Working with clean water sounds like a good choice to me. Wish me luck, I’ll do whatever it takes to win.

We’re all about celebrating the fourth of July, however with the heat in the western states this year, we would just like to caution everyone of the dangers of fireworks. I would like to see a standard light show that was not so dangerous to us or the environment. Have a fun-and-safe happy Fourth of July.

Thousands of years ago the very glaciers that carved the knife ridges and sharp craggy peaks in the Montana Rocky Mountains, pushed their way down the Flathead Valley. And when they retreated, they left behind quite a gift. Flathead Lake is a sprawling blue jewel at the base of the Swan and Mission ranges. It covers nearly 200 square miles, has more than 160 miles of shoreline and reaches a depth of 370 feet. But numbers alone can’t begin to describe its beauty or describe the childlike wonder you’ll feel when you first dip your toes into its cool, clear water.

If you’re trip brings you to Montana for Independence Day, you’ll definitely want to cruise around the Flathead lake. Many of the towns have parades and celebrations and Lakeside puts on one of the best fireworks displays in the state. For a special treat, rent a boat and see fireworks from the water.

It’s shaping up to be a hot summer, lets all make sure our pets have shade and plenty of water. Be sure to check up on the elderly also, keep as cool as you can. My sweet Mommy lives in San Diego, perfect weather year around. If it gets too hot here, you know where we’ll be heading.
