DeerLake Weekly Letter, First Snows

Watching our morning show today, the weather guy comes on and says, “your local forecast is, Yikes!”
Ok, so he got my attention, I had never heard of Yikes-weather. He follows that with, its going to get below 0. Guess he was just being funny, below 0 around here is normal. No big deal, dig-out the winter clothes. We have 6 inches of snow already, cold and sunny is nice.

Shop till you drop is what they say. I say, shop local when you can. Better yet, make some art or make a meal for the ones you love.

Becca is getting good grades in college. No kidding, this sweet gal has a brain. At 59 she is carrying a full load of classes. After a year and a-half now, she is feeling as if she might be able to graduate with two degrees. Still a ways to go, she’s just half way. Wish her luck, math-class is hard.

When it comes to decorating for the holidays, we don’t waste any time. The granddaughter was over for Thanksgiving, and as with tradition, we picked out the Christmas tree, and it is up and decorated. After all, this is the merriest time of the year. Don’t let the holidays stress you out. Start early and decide that this year you will celebrate the holiday season in a relaxed and organized way.

I readied my red new bobsled
But put it in back in the shed,
Pulling my cap over my head
I trudged to the house instead.

Christmas time–You can feel it…

There is music and magic in the air…

We are sending our Christmas greetings…

To those about whom we care …

We’d already done all the chores, and I couldn’t think of anything else that needed doing, especially not on a night like this. But I knew Pa was not very patient at one dragging one’s feet when he’d told them to do something.

DeerLake Weekly Letter, Happy Thanksgiving

Our first recorded Thanksgiving in what became our home in Montana, took place in this small town of Kalispell, in 1992.   So, as we look back on Thanksgivings in Montana, we take time to reflect on both the good times and good people.
I think Thanksgiving is one of the most wonderful holidays of the year. I can’t think of anything more important to focus on than being grateful. And no people in the history of the world ever had more to be grateful for than citizens of the United States.
I am grateful for freedom to be in charge of my own life.
I am grateful for family.
I am grateful for opportunity.
I would go on, but this list would never end.

As family joins us this year to celebrate Thanksgiving and grace our holiday table, we relax by our wood-burning fire, and join together in what has become our pie-making ritual. Many pies are made the day before, however there is always someone who did not get their favorite. We will enjoy our holiday doing as much or as little as we wish in our Montana home.

With some of our favorite holidays approaching, we continue to enjoy a warm fall and extended harvest season. Many of our local ranchers have been bringing in their herds, under the coming threat of hard frosts and snowstorms.

Things are really cooling down, just a reminder to keep your pets warm and hydrated.

Turkey, turkey in the pen,
It’s Thanksgiving time again.
Still you strut around with pride
When you should take off and hide.

Every day, visualize Jesus being with you
and opening yourself to receive His love, joy and peace.

Do you want beautiful but ordinary,
or would you like to challenge the day with a customer favorite I call the Thanksgiving Special?”

Thought For Today –

turn routine jobs into joy,
and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.

In our little neck of the woods, its craft-fair time. Artists and skilled craft makers are all geared up to show off their wares. Becca and I went to a craft sale today, wow, there was more fun items to see than ever. This is a great thing to do just for the fun of it. There must be more than 10 craft-fairs coming up in the next month. Support your local friends, neighbors, and artists; find a fun show to visit in your town.

I’m a believer, we buy local every chance we get. Nice to think we’re helping one of our neighbors to put food on the dinner table. Get ready, here comes the holidays, just two weeks until Thanksgiving. Be sure to make-plans so you don’t miss out on all the fun things. I do believe that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, reminds us all to give thanks and to help one another.

This time of year the weather is cooling, guests are coming and it’s all about food, shopping and football. Starting to snow again here in Montana. The snow on the ground sure does brighten everything up. Winters are no big deal around here, a bit of snow, a bit of cold. There are only a few days where the weather gets in the way of travel or fun. So Hurray, Let it Snow, Let it Snow, and enjoy all the added light that comes with it.

Snow is nice, but it’s also a good idea to be prepared for the coming weather. And there was a little procrastinating being done around here. The snow fell alright, however I did not have my studded tires on and it was pretty slick on my way to school. Don’t get stuck in the cold, be prepared.

Saw some brave wild turkeys in the yard today. It did run thru my mind just how good a wild-one would taste. For the past few years there have been a lot of turkeys around. Surprising how those big slow birds prosper and stay alive with all the wild cats, coyote, wolves and bear around here. Someone should tell them that next week would be a good time for them to go camping up in the hills. Turkeys aren’t as dumb as they look, they have learned which of the neighbors like to feed them and where to find the pet and livestock feed.

The table is in the dining room…

All decked out in a pretty sort of way…

Waiting for the special guests…

That are coming here today….

All the joy that Thanksgiving brings.

And as we gather together
from wherever we live
we give thanks to our Father above.

An adobe rancho I bought
But it’s not like I thought,
A Garden of Eden it’s not,
Everyday is simmering hot.

DeerLake Weekly Letter, Veteran's Day, A Cold Touch

We all know people who have served our country with honor. Remind them we are grateful for their service. Truly most of us live peaceful, secure lives, because of them.

Saying thanks is nice, but how about some free stuff for our Veterans.

Veterans Day is soon approaching and there are many restaurants and companies who want to thank our veterans by providing them with discounts or a free meal.

Among the non-food freebies, Great Clips is giving anyone who gets a haircut on November 11 will receive a card that a veteran or active-duty military service member can later use for a free haircut; UFC Gyms are giving free gym access to those with military ID and their families from November 11 to 15; Meineke offers free oil changes with military ID on Veterans Day; and national park admission is free for everyone on November 11.

As for free food and drink, check out this linked page. Unless otherwise stated, the offers are valid on November 11 only. In all cases, be sure to bring ID with proof of status as a current or former member of the military. Happy Veterans Day!

The crack of ice breaks the hush
In harmony with the winds rush
As it sings thru leafless treetops
Ice laden limbs crackle and pop.

Think with me for just a moment.
If I were to ask you, do you feel you are patriotic?
What would you say?
And when did you first know you had those excited feelings in your heart when the flag passed by?

Fall is the time for soup. So inviting on those cool blustery days.

==============================

Thought For Today –

We owe them a Lot,
On Veterans Day we remember again,
Those men and women who served.
We honor them now for what they did then.
